Grammer Scorbic's Household Guard

Make a utensil float.

Grammer Scorbic's Household Guard is a spell that should be cast on a household utensil to make it float around you, defending you without you having to hold it. The difficulty of floating a utensil is dependent on its weight, although once it is floating, it will stay there indefinitely unless it is dislodged or is brought down through use of Mother Brynda's Call of Gravity.

This is a DEFENSIVE spell that is learned at 15 levels of ma.sp.defensive.

This spell consumes 20 units of spell storage space.
The nickname of this spell is guard or floater spell.
To cast this spell you will need a household item.
50 GP is needed to cast this spell.

I appreciate any extra information reguarding focus tea results. If you'd like to contribute to this please make a copy of your magic skills and your focus tea results and mail them to me witches "Discworld Focus Tea" in the subject line. However, due to focus tea restraints a magic.spells.special bonus of 150 or higher is required.

This is a useful spell if you decide to dedicate enough XP into advancing skills or have the patience to TM it. Lighter items will be easier to lift in comparison to heavier items. Items that don't block much can be remedied by getting a lighter item or by waiting for some TMs to roll in. Typing "shields" will also list your arcane protection and will inform you of the condition of your item.

Utensil items can be found at utensils store such as ones found on the solitary street of Bad Ass and off of The Serpent in Bes Pelargic. These items consist of:

To see if an item that you have is a utensil whil it's in your inventory use "locate utensils" or "look utensils".

Lighter objects are easier to float but will overall block less. The blocking ability of an item is determined by your ma.sp.defensive bonus. An item will stay floating around you until it is dslodged and knocked out of orbit. This most commonly happens (particularly at higher levels) when recieving a special in combat. Floating more than one item at a time proves to be ineffective as well because they will evantually knock each other out of orbit.

Nanna Jehane Von Bruxa very kindly sent me some of her research results which concern the casting times of guard.

From Nanna Jehane:

Time is in seconds, btw, measured by the discworld clock, using an alias that did time; cast spell; time to remove the influence of the lag as much as possible. Error margin would be around 1 or 2 seconds :p

Though I lost the enchanting data, they were very peculiar. The casting time first started to go down at bonus in misc 150, to around 15 seconds I think at bonus 195 or so, to go back up to a minute at bonus 201, and then deteriorate again slowly, and a bit more strongly after bonus 250.... Worth to reinvestigate, anyway.

The weight of the item is the determining factor of whether or not it's knocked out of orbit. Disclaimer: Research results are "theories". Take them with a grain of salt. They're luverly guidelines to work with but cannot always be guaranteed.

And as a quick reminder you CAN float more than one item at a time. However, they have a great tendency to jut knock each other out of orbit and be entirely ineffective. It will be much more beneficial to you to only float one item at a time.
