Witches Commands

Before anyone gets too far into squints I'd like to point out how relatively new the command is and that "exact" information is limited and much is owed to those ladies who percevered and TMed. In addition the following chart is riddled with "???". This simply means that exact information has not been reported.

Squint Help File

Squint will let you research and use "squints" - ways of Staring at people in order to get your way. You can research by using various methods as building blocks, and thus affect all manners of aspects of the finished squint.

You can plant a squint you've researched into your memory by dubbing it something. You can then use that name to squint in that particular way at people. Squints you have in your memory can also be taught to other witches, and of course they can teach you their creations as well.

Simply squinting at someone will use the last squint you used, whether it was a researched one or one from memory. Squints that are being researched will not be affected by squinting like this, only the research syntax can do that.

Squint info will give you some idea of how the squint in question is built up. Without arguments the squint you're researching is checked, otherwise your memory is checked for matching squints.

By squinting from scratch you can begin the researching process anew. Dubbing will also let you start from the beginning with researching, but squinting from scratch won't put the squint in your memory first.

Effects from squints include making noses drop off, putting the Evil Eye on people and mentally damaging them.

Millie Hopgood over in Slice might have more information on the various methods available.

Clover's Help File

Many ladies find squints to be quite the challenge and unbelievably confusing. Squint is a command. However, it's a dynamic command. Currently there are eight different methods of squinting to research. Using "syntax squint" will show what methods you know (if any) in the first two lines.

When you first begin you don't actually have any squints. Instead you need to research a variety of methods until you decide (no, there is no message saying when the process is completed) that the research is done at which point you dub the squints.

PS If you squint at yourself you'll go cross eyed and be unable to squint for 5 - 10 minutes.

Squint Syntax

squint info [current squint]
This gives brief information on how your current research methods are going.

Further Information On Squints

Learned at: ???

A quick trip to Millie Hopgood's (located in Slice, Lancre Kingdom) and she will teach you squint if you ask her politely.

A squint is what evantually happens through the practice and development of a variety of methods. There are currently eight squinting methods: ogling, blinking, scathing, eyeing, squinching, peering, winking, and glancing. Using "syntax squint" will reveal which methods you have already learned, how to practice them up to squints, and how to teach squints.

The methods can be gathered from asking certain members of the NPC witch population around the Disc. You cannot learn methods from fellow witches, only fully grown squints can be taught.

A brief warning though, your language skills need to be around 60 levels of spoken to actually learn these methods depending on the region your in. To get all the methods you'll need at least 60 spoken in Agatean, Djelian, and Morporkian.

blinking +1 to strength stat, possibly more with a higher bonus Learned from Ethel located in Scrogden ??? levels of conjuring

How to Get & Use Squints

Squinting is a command you'll learn from Millie Hopgood in Slice. If you have the necessary skills say "teach me please" and Millie will then teach you the command squint. "syntax squint" at this point will become your friend. Squint doesn't do anything on its own. You'll need to learn the methods charted above and then proceed to "research" these methods. You research by actually using the commands on players, NPCs, etc. At no point are you informed if the squint is done, rather, using "squint info" when you feel your squint is finished it's ready to be dubbed. Using "squints" will list all the dubbed squints you have made or learned from others.

After the squint has been dubbed it settles in and will take up mind space similar to a spell.

From syntax squint after learning all of the methods:

squint research by {peering|squinching|scathing|ogling|blinking} [at] <target>
squint research by {eyeing|winking|glancing} [at] <target>
squint <squint> at <target>
squint from scratch
squint at <target>
squint dub <new name>
squint info <squint>
squint info [current squint]
squint
squint <string> [at] <any-living>
squint [at] <any-living> <string>
squint <any-living>
squint <string>

Methods can be used by themselves or mixed with other methods to make a squint. However, it's been said that mixing three methods is basically useless. For example, mixing scathe and squinch (both offensive methods) will make a more powerful combination than using scathe or squinch individually it seems.
